A year in review: 2012

Chefs, baristas, maitre des, waiters and brunch-goers of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to the second annual summary of where these two Brunch Addicts have taken you in 2012. Snapping up decor and delicious food to give you the best food photography we can provide, 2012 has been one big and exciting year. It was the year Miss SL had to forego her beloved soy lattes for espresso in line with a healthy diet she was trying for a month – and was converted! She was away travelling for over 4 months of the year, travelling to both Perth and Europe but stayed committed to the Melbourne brunch scene. Mr LB held down the Brunch Addict forte, enjoying (and lamenting) the bachelor lifestyle. He took over image touch-ups to bring you some of our sexiest photos to date.

The year 2012 was also the first year that we experienced the Taste of Melbourne food festival, which we have discovered is really, really fun! We saw demonstrations on how to make Goat Head tacos from the good people at Mamasita, watched Poh (from Poh’s Kitcen, Masterchef) do an Asian style cook-up and enjoyed a sake tasting session. We also enjoyed a couple of express lunches at the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, enjoying an exquisite three-course meal at Pearl restaurant before they closed later in the year as well as intimate French restaurant Embrasse.

In terms of food we consumed a whopping 56 brunches in 2012, with 28 of them including a cheeky brunch-dessert. We drank a total of 80 drinks (including beverages, milkshakes and other random liquid goodies!), of which 56 of them were coffee orders.. looks like we were well hydrated during our brunching sessions!!

Mr LB:
#firstworldproblems – frustrations and complaints that are only experienced from living in a wealthy, industrial nationalised nation that third worlders would probably roll their eyes at.

“Twitter is a fascinating tool. Who would have thought that we could communicate all of our own personal successes, failures, frustrations and endless other emotions in 140 characters or less? We all have a voice and we are not afraid to say what we think whether it’s something good or bad, career damaging (yes twitter feeds has been used by lawyers) or just harmless rambling. One of my favourite hashtags is ‘first world problem’. My major first world problem is the situation where, on my way to work, I realise that I’ve run out of muesli and I need to pick up some fantastic but sort of quick brunch and coffee to kick start my day. Where do I go that isn’t going to be sub-standard with its ‘coffee and bacon roll’ deal? Never fear, Brunch Addict is on the case and one stop we believe you should check out for a quick weekday brunch is the very popular, My Mexican Cousin.

The decor and space of My Mexican Cousin is cosy, intimate and cleverly flexible. There is an arrangement of tables and chairs inside the L shape area for the dining scene, a large bar table were you can easily catch up with a special someone whilst sharing a beverage and/or meal, a convenient sliding window to cater for the takeway coffee orders and ample outdoor seating area to enjoy the cool summer breeze. It exudes a certain coolness with its selection of art work and dimmed lighting.

While Miss SL quickly visited her office to unload the numerous bags she carries, I went and ordered my house blend Long Black [$3.80]. Sometimes cafes buy reputable coffee labels but fail in its delivery; My Mexican Cousin is not one of those establishment. This long black was impressive having a tan coloured head, delivering a lovely crisp taste with subtle flavors to be enjoyed with every drop. It’s a quality coffee you would expected on a weekend that can be achieved on a weekday event.

Egg & Bacon Roll

With taking in all of aesthetics, I did quickly notice the Egg and Bacon Roll [$9] hot off the press and cooling on the kitchen service bench. Just like love at first sight, I was hock and immediately ordered. With two eggs panned fried and ample of bacon that was douse with a tomato relish, nothing could go wrong. The bacon was cook to my perfect, being slightly crisp but still having soft pork goodness. The tomato relish had well defined smoky taste which had complemented the bacon and with the egg being fried with a little yolk gooness mixing with the bacon made this Egg and Bacon Roll quite the impressive punch. Even better, it had me satisfied to around 11! If there was a time that you needed a bacon a egg roll before you hit the office and you’re in the vicinity, this is your pit stop.

Egg & Bacon Roll

A good and affordable weekday brunch is something of a rarity. While it maybe a little more effort to catch up with someone for brunch before work, My Mexican Cousin is worth the effort to provide some on the spot brunch flavours.”

Miss SL:
“When anybody says the words ‘My Mexican Cousin’ the first thing I think of is one of my favourite meals at St Ali. The second thing I think of is Breaking Bad, an intense HBO television show which follows Walter White – an ex-science teacher diagnosed with cancer, on the journey to becoming an infamous drug cook, eventually taking on (and winning against) the Mexican drug gang, the Cartel.

Salvatore Malatesta (St Ali) and Jerome Borazio (Sister Bella, 1000 Pound Bend) and Maurice Esposito (Esposito and Saint Peter’s) weren’t particularly thinking of the Cartel when they collaborated together when opening My Mexican Cousin last year – they were thinking about infusing St Peter’s Creole with St Ali’s Sensory Lab coffee and Sister Bella’s drinks menu.

Admittedly My Mexican Cousins struggled at first. A blast from food blogger Burger Mary saw them hire her as a food consultant to improve their authenticity (despite, apparently, backtracking in their authenticity). In the end cafes need to play to their audience and it was with this in mind that Mr LB and I set out for a weekday breakfast session.

We arrived just after 8am on a Tuesday morning and the cafe was empty. A few patrons here and there were milling about outside near the streetwalk-facing counter, waiting for their coffees to be brewed by the young female barista. We took a seat at the bar so we could see the coffee-action get underway.

Mr LB had ordered me a double espresso [$3.80] in advance and I was quick to follow through with an order of the House made granola, poached berries and natural yogurt[$12]. My dish was quickly served and it looked delicious. I was a little confused initially, as granola is typically served with milk. There was enough yogurt to provide that creamy texture and so when I enquired with the waitress she said she was happy to provide it, but that it wasn’t typically served that way here. I decided to stay with the original intent of the dish and tucked in.

The granola was wonderfully crunchy and perfectly toasted. There were many different kinds of nuts used to make it, adding to the variety of subtle flavours. The natural yoghurt was creamy without being heavy, acting as the perfect ingredient to bind the granola together. It was light and slightly sweet, carrying the flavours of the poached berries with it.

I had a cheeky taste of Mr LBs egg and bacon role, which we’d fondly dubbed the ‘man breakfast sandwich’. It was really delicious and I loved the tomato relish they’d used to make the flavours more interesting. For $9 it was huge and was well-worth the money.

Overall My Mexican Cousins for breakfast is a great place to go during the weekday on your way through to work. The prices were not exorbitant and the flavours were delicious – even if they didn’t really scream anything particularly Creole about them. It’s the perfect place to pit stop for a good coffee and a delicious meal.”

Final thought: “Great weekday pit stop”

A Hobba and Skip Away

Opening hours:
Monday- Sunday 7am-5pm

Coffee: 5 Senses

Mr LB:
“A couple of weeks ago, I had embarked upon watching three hours of television about gadgets. Steven Fry’s 100 Greatest Gadgets was an interesting show as Steven Fry had subjectively selected his favourite gadgets and told the world why he was right (selfish!). It was interesting as he went through the list that the car never made the final cut. This could be for a number of reasons, including the fact that a car may not be a gadget or that it has no use at all. There is no doubt that an automobile is a fundamental element to life as we know it today. Car repair shops provide an open and large space and would be a great opportunity to fit out a cafe. With that revelation there is a cafe which originated from a car garage – Hobba coffee + kitchen.

The first thing that you will notice when you get to Hobba coffee + kitchen is the sheer size of it. This cafe has a large clean presence with carefully position down lights and ample natural light. There are various seating options which is ideal for groups and individuals. There is even enough room to plant a beautiful hanging tree and a kids corner. For a guy that likes the idea of embracing the mums and dads to bring the little lovely or terror (depending on his/her mood), Hobba coffee + kitchen caters for all. There is a lovely ambiance which allows for big groups to attend but also having the opportunity to have a friendly conversation without being impacted by surrounding noise.

It was time to feed my addiction…coffee. My Long Black [$3.50] was from 5 Senses, who lately (in my opinion) are really making a big scene on the coffee front. On most occasions we have had their Dark Horse blend which is a fantastic roast and enjoyed on a number of occasions. However Hobba coffee + kitchen chose a different blend, named the Hardest Blend. My coffee certainly had a darker flavour but with a fruity flavour appearing in the aftertaste. There was a clean and elegant finish which was refreshing and addictive. I have been going to Hobba coffee + kitchen on a regularly basis for the past couple of months and I can confirm that their consistent coffee craftsmanship is spot on. I also like the fact that they have taken a unique coffee flavour as their house blend – a bold step which has certainly paid off!

The food menu is unusually small when you consider the size of the premise. However, you can never judge a book by its cover. There is a good selection of options to pick from for brunch with change to spare after ordering a coffee. On this occasion I was keen for something sweet and opted for the Grilled pear brioche French toast with apple & rhubarb crème fraiche & hazelnut streusel [13.20]. I was quite surprised that there was only one slice of french toast, but that aside plating was a work of art. This dish certainly had a sweet spot and it was delectable with the apple that still retained its form. The nutty hazelnut was a necessary element to break the sweet flavors that went well with the French toast.

Simple may be the new black for cafe decor and experience, but it has surely paid off at Hobba coffee + kitchen. There is a clear sense of friendless and relaxation at Hobba coffee + kitchen with no pressure at all to leave. Sure my meal was a little tiny, but the quality of the food was of a high standard with a reasonable price. What else more can I say? If you are in the area and the car decides it wants a rest, you can rest with a brunch at Hobba coffee + kitchen.

Miss SL:

“On a busy road in a not so busy area, lies Hobba coffee + kitchen  – a simplistic, no-nonsense and fresh cafe. It’s easy to miss by The Muffler Man store next door, but once you enter it’s like stepping into a small haven. New to the area with relaxed and extremely friendly staff, this cafe offers coffee by 5 Senses, morning breakfast and snack food. Has it become my new local along with Coin Laundry? Yes. Yes it has.

The two gentlemen behind Hobba coffee + kitchen - Gerrick Numan and Josh Powell – have been in the industry for over a decade with Numan providing expert knowledge on what makes a good brew and Powell heading up the kitchen (drawing on his past experiences at Vue De Monde, Circa and Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck in the UK).

We arrived to one of the regular waitresses greeting us with a menu as soon as we sat down beside the feature tree in the back of the cafe. Mr LB and I had eaten rather late the night before, so I opted for something healthy – the House blend honey roasted granola, organic natural yogurt, poached rhubarb & pear [$10], with a soy latte to accompany.

I had been here several times before Mr LB and I decided to formalise our visit here, having previously eaten their piadinas, tasted the wagyu burger (amazing steak chips accompanying it!) and tasting some of their breakfasts options. Each time I was presented with a meal that I have enjoyed. The food can occasionally be wholly simplistic (such as the smashed avocado on toast) and other times just purely delicious (roast pumpkin piadina).

When my muesli came out, I knew immediately that I wouldn’t be able to finish it. The serving size was massive, but would have been perfect for a man on an empty stomach. The rhubarb was a beautiful pink colour which added life to my muesli. It was juicy, soft and bursting with flavour. Sitting underneath was the perfectly poached pears, infused with cinnamon. They were soft but firm, retaining their shape and flavour without being overpowering.

Hobba coffee + kitchen have their own special granola blend made from toasted muesli, coconut, pinenuts, peaches, cranberries and who knows what else! Hearty is an understatement with this muesli blend and it kept me full well into lunchtime.

Overall Hobba is a relaxed, understated environment. The staff are possibly the friendliest I’ve come across and the food is simple, fresh and delicious.”

Final thought: “Simple, delicious food that won’t break the bank”
