2013 was the year we got a new Prime Minister (twice!), had gay marriage legalised and then lost in the space of a week. Economic growth was minimal on all fronts. Australia had lost a car manufacturer but reclaimed the Ashes. Reviewing the headlines and news worthy items, it’s easy to draw a conclusion that 2013 was a tough year. However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Life goes on and often it’s the small moments that make the world go around – one of these being brunch. To summarise Melbourne’s brunch scene for 2013, we would say ‘absolutely delicious and sufficiently strong’.

2013 was the year we saw the strong roastery incumbents Code Black and Industry Beans making their mark on the Melbourne Coffee scene. They are not only pushing the boundaries in providing a high quality coffee, but encouraging innovative brews (Industry Beans recently released a cold brew infused with soda). This year also showed that talent, commitment, service and solid resources are required to provide a high quality brunch. With the likes of Top Paddock and Touchwood providing a 100-plus seating layout matched with high levels of service, they show restaurateurs need to have a strong plan and unique vision to be successful. With an already strong brunch scene, we predict the standards for 2014 are going to be set even higher.

We had a total of 54 coffees in 2013 and it’s interesting to note that the most reviewed coffee blend was yet again, Five Senses – at a whooping eleven times! This is followed by Proud Mary , Padre & Dukes. It seems we were a fan of baked eggs and fritters, shown as our two highest consumed meals with salmon not too far behind.

This year we aim to review more brunch spots, from the latest openings to the well established that have fallen off our radar. We are excited to see what Melbourne has to offer in 2014 and we are always on the hunt for the best brunch in Melbourne. Happy New Year everybody and happy brunching for 2014.

  1. The Hangry Bitch

I love how the 2014 hit list has some oldies. Melbourne’s brunch cafes have certainly sprouted like weeds over the past couple years, there’s just no catching up! I’m going to patronize the “older” cafes this year myself: there are places I’ve been and thoroughly enjoyed pre-blogger days but haven’t been able to visit due to the want and need of checking out the new guys.
    Happy brunching in 2014!

I really want to re-visit (and blog, haha) Auction Rooms, Pope Joan and East Elevation. Newish places to visit would be Cobbs Lane and Barry.
Hey, lemme know if you’re interested to do brunch together one day =)
