Coffee: Small Batch, Seven Seads & Market Lane

Melbournians can’t get enough of pop up stores and eateries. Gone are the days of well-loved brands taking months (or years) to scope out the ideal location to build a business, residing there so long that the location becomes synonymous with the brand – think Brunetti’s original location. Whilst location is still a fundamental component to building up a brand and following, the experience is also a crucial factor. The concept of a ‘limited experience’ creates excitement and drives people to go before they miss out.Placeholder cafe is built on the great friendship of Sam King (ex-Patricia) & Sonam Sherpa, and is driven by their love for coffee. This coffee and small bite operation at the Nine Smith Street site is only in operation for a year, before Neometro set out to develop a new urban residency. A year is a long time and the boys have one main focus – crafting exceptional coffee and creating a seamless experience that will leave you wanting more.

Between the period of purchased dormant land to finished urban residency, Neometro are hosting a number of intriguing and interesting social projects such as Placeholder, a 3000 acre urban garden and a not-for-profit art gallery, Slopes.

There are two espresso blends on offer. Seven Seeds is the house blend with other beans rotating based on their seasonal offering. If you fancy more of smooth and subtle coffee taste, there is always the option of Market Lane filter. Mr LB had a house long black [$3.70] which was in good form with a golden-like head matched with a sensational balance of fruity acidity and a clean finish.

Miss SL had a full-bodied double espresso that was served with sparkling water to cut through the sweetness. It was the perfect start to our Sunday morning having caught up with a few friends as we sat out in the sunshine, just us and our well brewed coffee. Placeholder creates a special experience that will not be in this location for long.

Final thought: “Great coffee for a quick step in”
